The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the right to question particular calls made by the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
