Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
