The Top Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Premier Spot.

On the surface, Lux could seem more like a challenging scholarly quiz rather than a new popular music project from a musician whose previous single featured an international pop star. Broken across 4 separate sections and sung in thirteen languages, this is a breathtaking symphonic work exploring feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently by way of the prism of different women saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—is launched skyward here, supported by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer daring by itself renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars look quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to escape dry academic chin-stroking is almost a miracle, with sole credit going to Rosalía. Although it's not her first project to fuse historical sounds with the present, its scale are much greater here, with the balancing act far more pronounced. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, beyond its complex melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent drama, is an essential sense of joy. Much like the iconic artist at her peak, there is a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener into its tornado. Even when she is tearing hearts in two, the listener nevertheless want to be alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

This exuberant energy comes forth brightly on a stirring piano-led song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for several moments. Then, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated string surge crashes in with comedic impact. The song immediately shifts into the wild single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The charm with this album is that you rarely quite understand—or even want to predict—what it will go next."

Almost every song concludes in a totally distinct point from where it started. One moment explores the fleeting nature of fame over a featherlight orchestration only to collapsing in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic style starts out dark and sinister, with prowling beats, before sudden flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Between Art & Pop

A key balancing act on the album involves navigating the gap of bold experimentation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that the album has become the artist's first release to break into the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a collection of truly catchy pop songs. One track performed primarily in English swells around a chorus that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks while it spirals skyward. That trick is repeated by a different expansive track that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes like a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces with its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the vocals carry a sharp edge, like a storybook character hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a motherfucker / You have the podium of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux is pop on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for capital-A Art amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its inherent excess. It is a deep source of hidden treasure that requires time to completely explore but doesn't seem like a chore. Where some major releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, this record offers a lavish feast at which the characters at the table, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flit between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about hopeless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly creative visionary.
